Larry Hayden and I are at the 420 Café in the center of Amsterdam on a Monday night in January playing cuts in honor of my mother’s birthday—Elsie Sinclair would have been 99 today—and of several friends in Detroit who have passed away in recent times, including pianist Kenny Cox with the CJQ, the poet & pianist James Semark, Joe Weaver, Lyman Woodard, Kenny Martin, Ron Allen, Kenny “Pancho” Hagood “live” with the Miles Davis Nonet, Nathaniel Mayer, and John Sinclair & His Motor City Blues Scholars in homage to the late saxophonist known as Big Red.
