Episode 588 is coming from Frenchy’s Garage in New Orleans where I
do my smoking, reading and thinking while I’m staying with Frenchy and
Tina and Two Bears, their son, just across the Old Jefferson Parish line
from Oak Street, Frenchy’s studio & gallery and the Maple Leaf Bar.
It’s the Friday before Mardi Gras and we’re still trying to lay our Big
Chief to rest with the third episode of our Radio Funeral for Big Chief
Bo Dollis of the Wild Magnolias, who passed away on January 20 at the
age of 71. This third hour of our memorial service offers a suite of
selections from the AIM Records album called 30 Years…And Still Wild
that was issued in the 1990s and contains the first recorded
performance by Bo Dollis at a White Eagles Indian practice at Stanley’s
Bar in the 7th Ward circa 1970; the first appearance of the Wild Magnolias with Willie Tee and his band at the 2nd
Tulane University Jazz Festival; a rehearsal session and the master
version of their first 45 rpm release in 1970, “Handa Wanda”; a pair of
Wild Magnolias numbers recorded with Donald Harrison Jr. in the 1990s;
and the final recording of Big Chief Bo Dollis from the recording
sessions for the album called A New Kind Of Funk; plus my own
homage to Big Chief Bo Dollis called “We Love Big Chief” with my Blues
Scholars in Amsterdam with Tom Worrell on keyboards. Big Chief Monk
Boudreaux and the Forgotten Souls Brass Band close out the service with
their reading of the Wild Indian prayer that started the show, “Indian
Red.” Special thanks to Steve The Fly for helping me get my hands on the
AIM album for this show.
