Guitar Army Review
Book – Guitar Army: Rock & Revolution with MC5 and the White Panther Party. This has been out for awhile, in an updated edition, but I hadn’t gotten round to checking it out until recently. Originally published in 1972, Guitar Army is poet, MC5 manager and White Panther Party leader John Sinclair’s writings on revolution, blues history, government brutality, rock ‘n’ roll’s potential as a weapon, and more. Responsible for turning the Five onto the counter-culture, leftist revolutionary politics of the White Panthers, Sinclair became one of the more prominent victims of the war on drugs when he was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison over a couple of joints. This book spans his writing before (1968-69) and during his time in prison (1969-71). If you ever wanted to explore the roots of modern ‘music-inspired rebellion’, pick this one up and kick out the jams, motherfucker.
